About Us

OUR NAME (Origins)

The name of the Institute is SISTERS OF THE CHILD JESUS, known as SJI and derived from the Latin title ‘SORORES A JESU INFANTE’. We are a religious and apostolic Institute of Diocesan Rite. With our name, we are privileged to make our own the spirit of the mystery of Bethlehem where our Lord began his work of salvation. We remember that Bethlehem means house of peace.

The Institute was founded in 1950 by the Right Reverend Bishop Alois Haene of the Society of Missionaries of Bethlehem (SMB). Our Mother House is in the Diocese of Gweru.

Our participation in the mission of the Church consists of various apostolic activities. No matter what type of work it may be, it is for us the Father’s will for the salvation of the world.
