The name of the Institute is SISTERS OF THE CHILD JESUS, known as SJI and derived from the Latin title ‘SORORES A JESU INFANTE’. We are a religious and apostolic Institute of Diocesan Rite. With our name, we are privileged to make our own the spirit of the mystery of Bethlehem where our Lord began his work of salvation. We remember that Bethlehem means house of peace.
We, African Religious women of the Child Jesus rooted I Christ, are called to contemplation in action. We live prophetic lives proclaiming Gospel values and bringing hope to a suffering world. Reading the signs of the times, we respond compassionately by challenging injustices among ourselves, Church and Society especially the abuse of power, women and children and all that causes poverty.
Our particular mission is to make Christ present and known among people, by what we are and in the manner in which we conduct ourselves in the various apostolic activities. Our very presence in our community and apostolate is an opportunity to witness and show forth Christ.
Spirituality is a gospel value that is enshrined in the way we live. Our Spirituality is of the Child Jesus in the manger at Bethlehem (Lk 2:7). In the Spirit of Childlikeness, the fruit of our loving relationship with God our Father, we are simple, humble, joyful and loving in our selfless service to the Church. In union with Christ, we totally depend on and trust in God (Gal. 3:26).
This section covers the Vision, Spirituality Charism and community outlining the values needed for them to carry out the missions that will guide the Congregation in the next five years. SJI Sisters are called for mission in the church. They are an active Institute and their specific mission is to make Christ present among people.
They live in community and are dedicated to God by love (cf LG 44). United to Jesus in mind and heart, they join in the work of redemption and spread the Kingdom of God (cf PC 5). To all people, they try to give the example of a truly Christian love and make known God’s love and kindness which He revealed to us in Christ (cf Tit 3:4).
